Immigrating from Russia with the goal of serving in the U.S. Army, Dreben enlisted to serve three hitches in the Army including the Spanish-American War and China during the Boxer Rebellion. His skills - particularly as a machine gunner - drew the attention of then Captain John J. (Black Jack) Pershing. His skill as a gunner led him to Latin America as a Soldier of Fortune and ultimately serving as a member of Pancho Villa's Golden Guards. Settling in El Paso he eventually enlisted in the U.S Army to serve in World War I where he won the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre and the Medailee Militaire. ; Signed by Author
