The greatest running back in rushing yards was Emmitt Smith. Smith gained a total of 18,355 yards on the ground during his 15 year playing career from 1990-2004. Smith holds the distinction of being the only running back to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award, a Super Bowl title (with the Cowboys) and the NFL rushing title in the same year (1993). Smith, who was drafted as the number 17th pick of the 1990 draft by the Cowboys from the University of Florida, was inducted into Football’s Hall of Fame in 2010.
His nickname was “Sweetness” and his moves were anything but sweet to his opponents during his 13 seasons wearing number 34 for the Chicago Bears. Payton, who was the number 4 overall pick in the 1975 from Jackson State University, amassed 16,726 yards rushing from 1975-1987. His efforts helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX in 1985. Payton’s soft spoken demeanor and charitable efforts not only led to his induction to the Hall of Fame in 1993, but his name on the league’s community service award.
Sanders was a Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma State University in 1988 and the number 3 overall pick in the 1989 NFL draft. Sanders, who averaged 1,527 yards a season for the 10 years he played in the league, left the game in 1998 1,457 shy of the record that had been previously held by Walter Payton. Considered one of the greatest running backs of all-time, Sanders was inducted in NFL’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
